Resolve Missing Operating System Error Quickly

Method 1: Rebuild BCD

You can encounter missing operating system from the boot loading issues. In that case, you can try to rebuild BCD and check whether it resolves the error or not. In that case, try to follow these steps:

  1. At first, you have to boot from your Windows installation media.
  2. Next, you need to select the language and region, you need to tap on the Repair your computer.
  3. In case of, missing operating system Windows 10, then you have to tap on the Troubleshoot and then Command Prompt.
  4. For missing Operating System Windows 7, at first, you need to choose the first item and then the Windows 7 system. Once done, you have to tap on the Next. Now, you have to tap on the   Command Prompt.
  5. Now, in the command prompt, you need to type “bootrec /rebuildbcd” as well as you have to hit the Enter button to continue.
  6. In case, if you are asked whether you want to add a new installation to the boot list, you can enter the letter “Y”.
  7. Once done, you have to close the Command prompt and restart your computer.

Method 2: Set the system partition active

When you encounter this typical error with your device, then it can happen that the partition which contains your Operating System is not active. At first, try to follow these steps:

  1. At first, you have to boot from your Windows installation media.
  2. Once done, you have to select the language and region as well as you have to tap on the Repair your computer.
  3. In case of, missing Operating System Windows 10, then you have to tap on Troubleshoot and then Command Prompt.
  4. Now, you have to type “diskpart” and then hit Enter to continue. After that, you have to type “list disk” and press Enter to continue.
  5. Here, you will be able to see a list of the disk will appear. At this point, you have to type “select disk # (“#” here refers to the number of the disk where you have installed your system)” and hit Enter to continue.
  6. After that, you have to type “list partition” as well as hit Enter to continue. It will show you a list of partitions in this disk.
  7. Next, you have to enter the “select partition # (“#” here refers to the number of the System Reserved partition, where the boot loader is located. Usually it is the smaller primary partition)”.
  8. Once done, you have to type “active” as well as hit Enter to continue.
  9. In case, if you notice that, the system partition is set to active. You have to type “exit”  in order to exit the disk part. Now, close the command prompt. After that, you have to restart your computer and check if this error persists or not. If not, then try to follow the alternative method.

Method 3: Configure BIOS

In case, due to your faulty BIOS, you are getting this error. Then, you have to check and reset the configuration of it in order to resolve this error. In that case, take note that configuring the BIOS is a complicated job. Improper operations can be bought by unexpected errors. So, be careful about it:

  1. At first, you have to enter the BIOS.
  2. Now, you have to check the Boot order in the BIOS and be sure about that, your hard drive is properly detected.
  3. In case, if you won’t be able to find your hard drive. You can reset your BIOS settings to the default configuration and restart your computer.
  4. If the step fails to perform its work, then you have to check the status of the error.

Method 4: Changing SATA mode and using USB 2.0

In case, if you are reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows, and the whole procedure is stuck in the middle and now you are receiving an error showing “Missing Operating System”, it means that the system is unable to detect the OS and to install it. In that case, you can change SATA mode using the BIOS settings.

  1. At first, you have to Enter the BIOS by pressing the correct key (F1, F2, F3, etc.).
  2. Now, in the BIOS settings, you have to navigate to the Storage Configuration as well as you have to change the setting to/from AHCI.
  3. Once you are able to change the option, then be sure about that, you have plugged in your removable media in a USB 2.0 port.
  4. After completing all of the steps, you have to restart your computer and try to install or reinstall Windows again and check if this error resolves or not.

Method 5: Installing Windows Freshly

If all of the previous methods, fails to perform its job, then you can try to install a new copy of Windows in your machine. It will probably erase all the data from your primary partition where Windows is installed as well as reset everything including the applications. So, you can try to perform a data recovery procedure before performing this step.

In order to perform a clean installation of Windows, you have to download it from the website and then you need to create a bootable media.
