Are you seeing nothing but a black screen on your PC? This black screen issue on Windows is particularly common as it can pop up all of a sudden. Additionally, it won’t show you any error codes, and thus it can lead you to a confusion. However, this article throws light on this issue and shows you how to fix black screen on your PC.

Unexpected as it is, a black screen on Windows OS can show up due to various reasons. From simple overheating to faulty drivers, the reasons may vary. Though this black screen is most common in Windows 10, the fixes mentioned below applies to all Windows version.

Solution 1: Check Power On Monitor

Make sure the monitor indication light is on. If the monitor is on, press the monitor menu button and bring on the setting menu on the screen. If the monitor menu is not appearing, then the problem might be with your monitor itself. Try to replace the monitor and see whether it resolves the problem.

Solution 2: Shut Down Your PC And Remove Peripherals

If you get a Windows 10 black screen after login, then you should turn off your computer completely by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds and then unplugging the power cord. If you are using a laptop, then you may consider removing the battery as well.

After this, disconnect all the peripherals including power cable, printer, scanner, network cable, even keyboard, and mouse. Wait for a minute or two, and reconnect the battery (in case of a laptop) and power cable. Turn on your PC and connect only with the essential peripherals like keyboard and mouse and leave the other peripherals unplugged. Check whether the problem persists.

Solution 3: Wake Up Display

Windows 10 might just not detect the display. In that case, a black screen will appear, so, you need to wake up the display by pressing Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B on your keyboard.

Once you are in the Advanced Options menu click Troubleshoot> Advanced options> Startup settings > Restart.

On the startup settings page, press F5 to enter in Safe mode with networking.

In the safe mode window, you can try the following solutions to get rid of the black screen on your PC.

Solution 4: Update Display Driver

Sometimes, faulty display drivers could have perhaps causing the black screen on Windows. To fix that you can uninstall it in safe mode and let Windows reinstall it on restart.

Click on Start> Control Panel> System and Maintenance> Device Manager.

Click on Display Adapters to expand it. Right click on your adapter name and select Uninstall. Click OK and then restart your computer.

Upon restart, Windows will reinstall the display drivers and if the problem was due to incopetent video driver then the issue should be resolved. If however, the black screen persists, then proceed with the next solution.

Solution 5: Disable Fast Startup

Disabling fast startup may fix the black screen issue. To disable fast startup follow these steps:

  1. Boot into safe mode with networking following the procedure mentioned earlier.
  2. Go to Control panel, view by large icons and click Power Options.
  3. Click on Choose what the power button does.
  4. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  5. Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended) and then click on Save changes.

Solution 6: Disable Integrated Graphics Card

If you are using an additional graphics card, then disabling the same might do the trick in solving Windows 10 black screen issue. To disable it follow these steps:

  1. Reboot your computer in Safe mode.
  2. Press Windows key + R at the same time to open the Run Dialog box.
  3. In the search bar, type devmgmt.msc and press the enter.
  4. Click on Display Adapters. If you see more than one graphics card, right-click on the integrated graphics card and choose Disable. And restart the system to make the necessary changes.

Solution 7: Disable High Contrast

Disabling high contrast may resolve the black screen issue on Windows 10. Here’s how:

  1. Reboot in safe mode.
  2. Open Settings and then click on Ease of access> High contrast.
  3. Select None from the drop-down list.
  4. Restart your computer.

Solution 8: Log In Using A New User Account

In case the user account is corrupted then it may trigger the black screen issue. Create a new user account in safe mode and see whether the problem resolves. Here’s how to do it.

Click on Start and look for Command prompt. Right-click on the result and select Run as Administrator. Type net user username/add and press Enter to create a new user. Change “username” to the name you want to set for your account.

Then, type the command net local group administrators username/add and hit Enter to change the newly created account to administrator. Change “username” to the account name you created. Restart your computer.

Now as you have created the new account, at this point, logging in with the newly created account should eradicate the problem.
