  • At first, tap on the Winkey and X key at the same time on your keyboard to launch the elevated command prompt. 
  • After that, go to the list and click on the Command Prompt as an Admin. 
  • Now, enter the following command.

            Chkdsk D: /f /r /x. 

  • In this command D is a defective drive and you need to replace it accordingly. 

           /f parameter helps you to search your drive and then they try to fix accordingly. 

           With the help of the /r parameter, you can scan your drive for the bad sectors. 

           /x parameter helps you to dismount your drive. 

Solution 2: Chkdsk Fail as the Hard Drive is Write Protected 

You should remove the write protection from your hard drive in order to run the Chkdsk command successfully. For that, go through the steps cited below. 

Method 1: Remove Write Protection with the Help of the CMD 

  1. Initially, bring up the power users menu and for that tap on the Windows key and X at the same time on your keyboard. 
  1. Next, navigate to the Power user menu and then click on the Command Prompt option as an admin. 
  2. When a UAC window comes and requests the permission, double-click on the Yes option. 
  3. After opening the new Command Prompt window, enter chkdsk E: /f /r /x and then hit the Enter button. 
  4. You can then replace E with the drive letter of your PC hard drive, USB drive. 

Method 2: Remove Write Protection with the Help of the Diskpart 

Through the Diskpart, you can remove the read-only attribute on your hard drive. To remove the write protection, follow the steps mentioned hereunder. 

  1. First, you should run the Command Prompt as an admin. 
  2. When you are asked for the notification, go to the prompt. 
  3. Then, type disk part and double-click on the Yes option. 
  4. After getting the message which stated “Disk attributes cleared successfully”, tap on the Exit option. 
  5. Again, run the chkdsk command and for that, you need to return to CMD. 

Method 3: Clear the Read-Only 

To fix this error, clear the Read-Only and to do so, go to the Registry Editor. Then, go through the steps that are mentioned below. 

  1. At first, tap on the Windows key and R at the same time on your keyboard and then type “Regedit”. 
  2. When the window will ask you for providing permission, select the Yes option. 
  3. Now, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolices. 
  4. After that, double click on the “WriteProtect” key to establish the value as “0”. 

Sometimes, you might not see the “StorageDevicePolices” option and then you need to follow the steps mentioned below. 

  1. Go to the Registry Editor and then click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control. 
  2. Head over the space and then double-click on the “New” option. 
  3. Now, click on the “Key” option and name it as the “StorageDevicePolices”. 
  4. After selecting the “StorageDevicePolices” option, select the “DWORD (32-bit) Value”. 
  5. Finally, enter the name as “WriteProtect” and then set its value as “0”. 

Solution 3: Scan your Drive for Corruption 

If your drive has the corrupted files then, you need to scan them as it can cause this error. To scan your drive, you need to perform the following. 

  1. Initially, go to the “This PC” option and then double-click on the faulty drive. 
  2. After that, navigate to the Properties option and then click on the Tools tab. 
  3. Now, select the “Check” option. 
  4. When you are prompted with a UAC dialog box, double-click on the Yes option. 
  5. In the end, wait for a few minutes until the scanning procedure to finish successfully.
